The South African Police Service (SAPS) has said it has recovered the weapons used in the brutal massacre of 18 people in Ngobozana village, Lusikisiki, on 28 September.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the high-calibre firearms were discovered in Flagstaff on Thursday evening. The weapons found included three AK-47 rifles and a .243 Steyr Mannlicher rifle.
Mathe explained that the high-calibre firearms have been taken in for ballistics testing to determine and confirm that they were indeed used in the crime and to determine which other crime scenes can be linked to them.
Two more suspects were arrested after being found in possession of the weapons, bringing the total number of arrests to six.
Earlier, four suspects were arrested, with three arrested in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal. Two of them were positively linked to the attack, while the third is suspected of being an associate. A fourth suspect surrendered to police in East London.
Meanwhile, Siphosoxolo Myekethe, a suspect arrested last week, abandoned his bail application on Tuesday. All six suspects will appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
However, police are still searching for Lwando Anthony Abi, one of the suspects, whose vehicle was found in Kokstad on Wednesday.
