Maritzburg United has been forced to move out of their home at Harry Gwala Stadium and relocate to Durban.
This happened after the Msunduzi municipality signed a three-year lease with Royal AM, giving that team exclusive use of the stadium.
With nowhere to play, Maritzburg United, a National First Division team, is leaving Pietermaritzburg after 21 years.
“It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of a significant change for Maritzburg United Football Club,” said chairman Farook Kadodia.
Kadodia is disappointed with the local municipality, saying they didn’t support the club’s plans.
Despite many efforts to secure a stadium for their matches, the club couldn’t get the help they needed to stay in Pietermaritzburg and return to the PSL.
“As we say goodbye, we want to thank our sponsors, partners, and most importantly, our amazing fans,” Kadodia added.
The club is now planning to change its name to Durban City and is looking for a new home stadium in Durban.
They might end up sharing a stadium with AmaZulu or Golden Arrows, two other teams based in Durban.
