The ANC’s eThekwini region leadership might be disbanded after the party’s provincial working committee (PWC) in KwaZulu-Natal blamed them for the party’s poor performance in the recent general elections.
The ANC got only 17% of the votes, far behind the MK party’s 45%.
The PWC says the eThekwini leadership did not campaign hard enough.
An ANC insider, who is not authorised to speak to the media, warned that disbanding the party’s eThekwini region could hurt the ANC before the 2026 local elections.
The ANC in eThekwini has suffered leadership problems, especially after chairperson Zandile Gumede stepped aside due to corruption charges.
There are also rumours of conflict between the regional and provincial leaders – specifically between provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo and eThekwini secretary Musa Nciki.
KZN ANC spokesperson Mafika Mndebele said the party does not comment on rumours and that the PWC would meet on Monday, but did not say what the meeting would discuss.
“If there’s any decision about eThekwini, we will make it public,” said Mndebele.
