Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane helped the Three Lions come back from behind to beat Slovakia in their Euro 2024 last 16 clash on Sunday.
Before Spain’s 4-1 defeat of Georgia, which included goals from Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo, England picked themselves up from a poor performance to progress to the next round.
After going ahead inside 25 minutes through Ivan Schranz, Slovakia restricted England from making too many opportunities and looked set claim a famous win.
With seconds of stoppage time to play, though, Gareth Southgate’s stars would come to the party with an unforgettable rescue act.
Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham combined with late substitute Ivan Toney to strike an unstoppable overhead kick past Martin Dubravka, sending the game to extra time.
Once the additional half hour begun, Kane would lead from the front to put the English ahead.
His goal was the fastest ever to be scored in extra time at the Euros (50 seconds), meaning that England have now scored the fastest extra time goal at both the European Championships and the Fifa World cup (first minute against Belgium in 1954).
The skipper headed home as Toney made the difference yet again with a second assist; and falling behind was too tough a hurdle for Slovakia to contain, meaning that the Three Lions will now face Switzerland in the quarter finals.
