Manchester United has decided to keep Erik ten Hag as their manager, who has asked the club to extend Benni McCarthy’s contract as strikers’ coach.
McCarthy, 46, has been a key part of Ten Hag’s team and has received a lot of praise for his work.
As a former head coach of Cape Town City and AmaZulu, McCarthy is well-liked by the players, especially because he can speak many languages which helps him to communicate with the team’s diverse players.
McCarthy’s current contract at Manchester United ends on 30 June. There was talk that he might leave to take the vacant coaching job at Kaizer Chiefs, especially when Ten Hag’s future was uncertain.
But now, with new support for Ten Hag from the owners, Ten Hag is in talks for a new contract and wants to keep McCarthy on the team, The Athletic reported.
In a recent interview, McCarthy said he loves his role at Manchester United but is also tempted by the idea of being a head coach again.
“I love working for Manchester United, but I also have a strong desire to be a head coach again,” he said.
“But if the club wants me to stay, I will be grateful and it will be amazing.”
During his time at Manchester United, McCarthy helped the team win the League Cup and the FA Cup.
McCarthy played for Orlando Pirates and he helped them win multiple trophies. He has now said he would be willing to coach Chiefs, Pirates’ rivals.
The club is expected to announce soon that Ten Hag will stay on as manager.
