The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party has escalated its battle over the 29 May election results.
The party led by former president Jacob Zuma is now lobbying other political parties not to sign off on the results until all grievances are resolved.
The party wants a recount, claiming that some of its votes, mainly in eThekwini and Pietermaritzburg, were given to the ANC and the DA to prevent it from winning KwaZulu-Natal.
Scrolla.Africa learned about the petition through leaked information from the IEC’s KwaZulu-Natal party liaison committee. The committee is meant to resolve electoral disputes, but an MK agent, Decent Ngcobo, used it to send the petition to other political parties.
When Ngcobo sent the petition, IEC official Sbonggiseni Nkomo scolded him for using the platform to lobby other parties.
Ngcobo confirmed to Scrolla.Africa that he circulated the petition and said the instruction to reject the results and not sign them off came from the MK party’s national office.
“Yes, we are rejecting the results, and the instruction came from the national office,” he said briefly when asked about the leaked information.
Nhlamulo Ndlela, the national spokesperson for the ANC splinter party, also confirmed that MK party agents should not sign off on the results as they are.
“How can they sign off the results with all the discrepancies?” Ndlela asked.
The demand for a recount comes as other political parties are meeting to discuss possible coalitions.
