As his contract with Manchester United comes to an end, former Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy has hinted at his dreams of coaching Kaizer Chiefs.

The Amakhosi are currently looking for a permanent coach after a disappointing 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

Kaizer Chiefs have been without a permanent head coach since sacking Molefi Ntseki in October 2023.

Cavin Johnson took over on an interim basis but failed to improve the club’s results, finishing 10th in the league standings.

Chiefs won nine games, drew nine, and lost twelve out of their 30 matches this season.

With the search for a new coach underway, McCarthy spoke about his interest in leading the team.

He has experience in the DStv Premiership, having coached Cape Town City and AmaZulu FC, where he won the Coach of the Season award after taking AmaZulu to a second-place finish in the 2020/21 campaign.

“Not many coaches in the world say no to institutions. Man United is an institution. Real Madrid is an institution. Bayern Munich is an institution. Vincent Kompany has joined Bayern Munich, he has gone to join an institution,” McCarthy said on MSW.

“I think we can safely say that Kaizer Chiefs is an institution. It’s a great club that I always had a lot of love for. My local team. The team that I supported as a kid is the Black and Gold of Kaizer Chiefs. Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure to play for them or to coach them.”

He said: “If the opportunity comes or anything, of course, I’ll have to sit down and think about it. Like I said, you don’t say no to institutions.”
