Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils ended a difficult campaign on a high, beating Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley to lift the FA Cup on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola’s champions of England had their sights set on winning football’s oldest cup competition for the first time in consecutive seasons. But their rivals has other plans.
Ten Hag removed talk of his future from the headlines as he lifted the trophy courtesy of goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Garnacho became just the third teenager to score an FA Cup final goal for United when he netted on the half hour mark. Nine minutes later, another teenage sensation would rise up to the occasion to double the advantage before the break.
In the dying embers, Jeremy Doku pulled one back, but it would be too little too late as the whistle blew for full time.
The Citizens kept the majority of the ball, but the deserving men in red looked more clinical throughout the afternoon.
United’s poor eighth-placed league finish made them lowest ranked team to win the competition since Arsenal under Mikel Arteta four years ago. The Gunners also finished eighth that year.
The derby day final brought an end to the English football campaign, with Euro 2024 next on the agenda in Germany next month.
Football fans can still look forward to the Uefa Champions League final next Saturday, with Real Madrid taking on Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
