The Zulu nation is preparing to honour the late King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu on the third anniversary of his death.
King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has called for a minute of silence to be held at noon on Tuesday.
In a statement, he said: “A minute of silence will be a fitting tribute to the late King. We urge all members of the Zulu nation and friends to observe this moment at midday.”
King Zwelithini’s death in March 2021 sent shockwaves around KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of South Africa. He had been admitted to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban shortly before his death.
The longest-reigning Zulu monarch, King Zwelithini led the Zulu nation for 40 years, taking the throne in 1971 at the age of 21.
He was widely respected as a significant and influential traditional leader in South Africa.
A direct descendant of the legendary King Shaka, King Zwelithini leaves a legacy as the leader of a nation that has grown to over 15-million strong.
King Misuzulu has encouraged people to observe the moment of silence wherever they may be, including workplaces, schools, hospitals, and even while travelling or dining out.
He also announced the postponement of the unveiling of a statue dedicated to the late King.
This event, along with other royal events commemorating the 110th anniversary of King Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo, will take place on Saturday 16 March at kwaCeza.
