Liverpool booked an FA Cup quarter final tie with Manchester United after teenagers Lewis Koumas and Jayden Danns led them to a 3-0 win over Southampton at Anfield.
With injuries continuing for the hosts, Jurgen Klopp fielded just four senior first team players for the cup clash. And just as they had done in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, the academy boys delivered the goods.
Teenagers Bobby Clark and Koumas combined for the opener on the brink of half-time before Danns struck a brace after coming on off the bench in the second period.
The last eight draw that preceded proceedings on Merseyside meant that the Reds knew they would face either Nottingham Forest or bitter rivals Manchester United away from home in the next round should they progress.
A late Casemiro winner for the Red Devils means that they will host Klopp’s boys one more time this season, with the tie scheduled for mid-March.
In other results, Chelsea overcame Leeds United by three goals to two while Wolves beat Brighton 1-0 at Molineux.
On Tuesday, Manchester City thumped Luton Town 6-2 while Newcastle United beat Blackburn on penalties.
The Citizens will face the Geordies in another all Premier League quarter final while Wolves will tackle Coventry and the Blues take on championship leaders Leicester City.
