Following their 2-1 win over Luton on Sunday, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville insists that the Red Devils are in the process of turning things around.
Early goals from Rasmus Højlund helped Erik Ten Hag’s side to all three points on a challenging afternoon at Kenilworth Road.
United now find themselves five points off the top four; and Neville believes that things are finally “starting to happen”.
“Travelling from Manchester this morning, looking about that league table, thinking about what United have got coming forward, there’s a lot more optimism about whether they can finish in the Champions League,” Neville said on Sky Sports.
“If I was looking at it today, I’d probably say yes, they’ll sneak in to that fourth or fifth place. They’ve got to be consistent, and haven’t been that over this season, but just the last few weeks, there are signs it’s starting to happen a little bit.”
Ten Hag’s men exited this season’s Champions League in dismal fashion, finishing bottom of their group, meaning that they must finish high in the league table to qualify for next season’s edition.
Traditionally, a top four finish was required. However, the expansion of the Champions League by Uefa means that a fifth place finish could just be enough.
The Red Devils currently sit sixth, three points behind Tottenham Hotspur and five behind Aston Villa.
