Chelsea snatched a point from Manchester City at the Etihad in Saturday’s late kick-off, leaving the champions chasing once more in the Premier League title race.
After picking up just one win in their last three league games, Mauricio Pochettino’s men finally looked like they had come to play upon arriving in Manchester.
The 4-4 result when the sides met in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge may not have been replicated in terms of goals, but both sides had ample opportunities to ensure a highly watchable affair.
The Blues were dominated by the hosts in terms of ball possession, but it would be a Raheem Sterling goal against his former club that would break the deadlock.
Chelsea looked dangerous on the counter while City’s star man Erling Haaland’s nine shots was his highest total without scoring in a game for City in all competitions.
The Citizens would probably have rued their missed opportunities even more had Rodri’s deflected shot not found the back of the net with just seven minutes of normal time to play.
The point helps Chelsea back up into the top half of the table. The damage that two points dropped for City will cause, however, will garner more attention.
Liverpool are now four points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side, who have just one game in hand on the Reds.
On the goal rush, second placed Arsenal picked up a big 5-0 win away to Burnley, meaning that the Gunners still occupy second spot for the time being.
Tottenham Hotspur were upset at home to Wolves while Newcastle United and Bournemouth drew 2-2 in some of the other games.
On Sunday, Sheffield United host Brighton before Manchester United travel to Luton Town.
