Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari for the 2025 season is a bold one – but it may not pay off.
With an amazing career that includes seven world championships, the British driver’s move is seen as a bold attempt to return to winning ways with a team that has had mixed success with former champions.
Ferrari’s passionate fanbase and legendary history in the sport provide a dramatic backdrop for Hamilton’s journey to another possible world championship.
His collaboration with team principal Fred Vasseur, under whom he has previously succeeded, adds an interesting layer to this new chapter.
However, Hamilton’s challenge will be as tough as it gets, especially with the presence of a highly talented teammate, Charles Leclerc, who is the main man in the team’s plans.
Ferrari’s struggle to consistently compete at the highest level in recent years means that Hamilton’s journey to see if he can help steer the team back to its former heights will be closely watched by the motor racing world.
The dynamics within the team, the strategic decisions, and the development of their car in response to Hamilton’s feedback will be important factors in determining whether this partnership can replicate the success of legendary figures such as Juan Manuel Fangio.
But if it doesn’t work, he will face the frustrations encountered by Alain Prost, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. Michael Schumacher joined Ferrari in 1996 but it took until 2000 before he won a world championship with Ferrari.
Many thought Hamilton would call time on his career after his gut-wrenching world championship loss to Max Verstappen on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021.
Hamilton’s relationship with Mercedes’ Toto Wolff has been strained at times, although both insist that the parting of ways is a friendly agreement.
The British driver is determined to make history and become the first man to win eight world championships.
But with the Red Bull’s dominance with Mercedes showing no signs of ending, Hamilton’s dream may never become a reality.
The 2024 Formula 1 season begins in Bahrain on 2 March.
