Angry residents caught a man accused of committing crimes in different areas of Tembisa’s Duduza and Tshelopele sections.

The man was necklaced, drenched with petrol and only a match strike was needed to end his life — and then he was miraculously saved from death.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers were doing their normal routine patrols when they came across the scene. The officers managed to rescue the man. He was saved and later united with his family.

No community members were arrested.

This incident comes seven days after six people were stoned to death in Tembisa’s Kanana section in the Rabie Ridge policing area.

In last week’s murder incident, community members hunted down suspected criminals, gathered them in one place and stoned them to death. Five of them died on the scene and the sixth died in hospital.

Police arrested two suspects in connection with those murders.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson, Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said at the time that: “Two suspects appeared before Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on 25 January on a charge of murder and assault GBH.”

Colonel Nevhuhulwi said police urge the public to not take the law into their own hands.

Last week’s killings pushed community-based patrollers, who call themselves Community Defence Unit (CDU), to beef up security and help the authorities fight crime.

On Saturday, the unit members traced and caught a murder suspect, who was taken to the Rabie Ridge Police Station where a case of murder was opened.

“We arrested a murder suspect after a male victim was allegedly stabbed to death in Mayibuye in the early hours of Sunday,” said Jeremiah Kgaleng from the CDU.
