In the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group F finale, Morocco secured a 1-0 victory over Zambia, which had major importance for host nation Ivory Coast.
Needing just a draw to advance, Zambia’s defeat by Morocco allowed Ivory Coast to slip into the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams.
Morocco’s win coming from Hakim Ziyech’s goal, ensured they finished top of Group F and will face South Africa in the knockout stages.
Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, who had earlier dismissed their coach Jean-Louis Gasset following poor group stage performances, now find themselves with a challenging last-16 match against Senegal.
Moroccan coach Walid Regragui, who was serving a suspension, watched from the stands as his team controlled the first half.
Despite numerous attempts, Morocco only managed to score once through Ziyech, who capitalised on a rebound after Zambia’s goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga initially blocked a shot.
Zambia, who haven’t won an Afcon game since their 2012 championship victory, struggled to create significant chances. Their attempts to salvage a draw, mostly through long-distance shots, were unsuccessful.
The result was a relief for Ivory Coast, who had been on the verge of an early tournament exit.
Zambia’s journey in the tournament, has however, come to an end.
