Steve Stolk’s run out, for 64 off 55, followed a David Teeger duck. And two overs later, Oliver Whitehead and Romashan Pillay would depart without scoring too, as South Africa collapsed to 230 all out.
Noah Thain (63 not out) and captain Ben McKinney (48) got the chase off to the best possible start as the visitors got to 137/2 in just 28 overs before the North Western rains began to fall.
The incessant showers meant that play could not continue, and England walked away with a 36-run win on the DLS method.
In the other game, New Zealand beat Afghanistan by one wicket in East London.
The low scoring encounter was an absolute joyride of emotions, with the Black Caps managing to complete the 92-run chase with only one wicket to spare.
On Wednesday, Sri Lanka face Namibia in Kimberley while Nepal and Pakistan go head-to-head in East London.
The West Indies and Scotland will hope that the weather in Potchefstroom improves as they face-off there in the third game of the day.
