Six suspects were shot and fatally wounded during a shootout with police officers in Inanda in the early hours of Thursday.

Three more suspects, two men and a 31-year-old woman survived the shooting and were arrested. One police officer had a bullet just graze his hand.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said police received information regarding the suspects and worked on information that led them to the suspects’ whereabouts.

“Police worked on intelligence about the whereabouts of the suspects. They were wanted for house robberies, murders, business robbery and carjacking,” said Brigadier Naicker.

“The police went to a house in Emachobeni in Inanda. When they announced their arrival, the suspects responded with a hail of bullets and the police returned fire.”

He said after the shootout, six suspects were found to have suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

“Three more suspects, two men and a 31-year-old woman, were arrested. One police officer’s hand was grazed by a bullet,” he said.

He said police seized two rifles and a shotgun which were found in the possession of the suspects. They also recovered a vehicle which was hijacked at KwaDabeka in December 2023.

The arrested suspects will be presented before the court soon.
