There was never any doubt for Red Bull or Max Verstappen at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday as he continued his march towards a third world title with five wins on the spin.
Red Bull’s “perfect” strategy got their star racer his seventh win in nine races this season, as he made the most of his pole position.
Verstappen and his team opted to make the first stop later than the Ferrari, who did so during a virtual safety car halt. He was quick to overtake once green flag racing resumed and never looked in trouble as he cruised into the distance.
Ferrari did keep pace, registering their 800th podium in Formula 1 races courtesy of Charles Leclerc’s second place finish.
It was Red Bull’s day though, with Verstappen going 81 championship points clear of his teammate Sergio Perez, who picked up third spot in Austria.
“I think the most important for me was in lap one, to stay in front. After that we could do our own race,” Verstappen said.
“Of course we opted not to box during the virtual safety car, and just follow our normal strategy, and I think that worked out really well. The tyre degradation was not that high around here and our stints were perfect, so it was a great day. I enjoyed it a lot!”
