Former Orlando Pirates defender Edward Motale feels coach Jose Riveiro might not make it beyond this season.
With the Buccaneers struggling for consistency, they are not guaranteed to meet their target for this season.
Pirates have set themselves the goal of returning to Africa and that requires finishing in the top three or winning the Nedbank Cup which comes with a CAF Confederation Cup berth.
The Soweto giants might have started considering other options to fall back on in the event Riveiro does not deliver what they have asked for.
But Motale tells the Buccaneers to carefully consider their recruitment of the next coach.
The 1995 CAF Champions League-winning captain says Pirates should avoid recycling their former coaches the way Kaizer Chiefs did with Stuart Baxter and Ernst Middendorp.
“In my opinion, I think they should look elsewhere,” Motale told Scrolla.Africa.
“I do not see any need of hiring a coach who has been there before, even if he was successful. I think this thing of recycling coaches is what is killing our football in South Africa.
“That is why we are going round in circles and stuck in one place. If they think of getting rid of the coach who is there, it is best to look for someone who has not been there before.”
The last time Pirates rehired a coach was the 2017 appointment of Milutin Sredojevic for a second stint after he had worked for them in 2006.
Motale does not believe their ex-coach Roger de Sa will bring a wealth of experience after spells in Egypt and Saudi Arabia as assistant coach to Carlos Queiroz.
“He was working under someone and taking instructions from the head coach,” said Motale. “So, I do not think De Sa should come back.
“Like I said, this is what is killing our football. We have to move on and progress.”
De Sa guided Pirates to the 2013 CAF Champions League final.
