The old rivalry between Manchester United and Leeds United produced another classic clash as the sides drew 2-2 in the Premier League on Wednesday.
Following the sacking of manager Jesse Marsch, Leeds arrived at Old Trafford without a head coach — but all this turmoil went out the window as soon as the first whistle was blown.
Less than a minute into proceedings, teenage star Wilfried Gnonto sent a 20-yard strike past David de Gea to put the visitors in front.
Erik Ten Hag’s side kept the majority of the ball and created more going forward. Form and attacking threat meant little, though, with Leeds stubborn at the back and hanging on through the pressure for the remainder of the first period.
The second half started as well as the first, with Gnonto involved once again. The Italy international played in Crysencio Summerville, whose deflected ball found the back of the net courtesy of Raphael Varane. It was 2-0 with the Red Devils faithful shell-shocked.
Casemiro’s absence due to suspension was a clear miss for the hosts, however Marcus Rashford got them back in it on the hour mark.
His goal made him the first United player to score in six consecutive home league games since Wayne Rooney over a decade ago.
Jadon Sancho made it 2-2 on his return just moments later, banking on the momentum and drive from the crowd. The strike was his first goal since September; and he needed just 11 minutes to do it after coming on off the bench.
The Red Devils pushed on, but it was not to be as their 13-game winning streak at Old Trafford finally came to an end.
Leeds got a point to start their post-Marsch era; and will be confident of going one better when they face United again — this time at home on Sunday.
