Queen of Limpopo dance music Makhadzi could be dragged into a court case over an alleged payment for a gig she never even turned up for.
According to events promoter Rabelani Madula, the “Ghanama” hitmaker owes him R20,000 and has been dodging him for months as he tries to recoup the fee.
He said he booked Makhadzi for a gig at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg on 21 August but she didn’t arrive at the scheduled time.
“She was scheduled to perform at 11 because we close at 12 but she rocked up after 12. We then made an arrangement for her to come back to perform at one of my Sunday shows on September 4,” recounted Madula.
“We were expecting her to honour the agreement but she didn’t show up, leaving my team and fans disappointed. She said the reason she couldn’t come was that she had been booked in Botswana.”
The event’s organiser said Makhadzi promised to pay back the money after performing at the One Woman Show on 1 October. “But to this day, she has never paid back the money. She ignores my calls and does not return my messages.
“When I bumped into her at a festival in Giyani in Limpopo on December 26, she promised to pay me back but she’s running away from me. I have consulted my lawyer to pursue the matter. She is a disappointment and I won’t ever book her again,” said Madula.
Makhadzi could not be reached for comment but Advocate Nkanteko Maluleke, from the singer’s management company Open Mic Productions, said they are not aware of any legal action.
“The arrangement was probably done between the two. As a company, we are not aware of the matter.”
