South Africans have rallied behind musician and producer Dr Malinga to help him fight his financial woes.

Since his emotional interview on Podcast and Chill went viral last week, Malinga has received over R100,000 in donations.

After the podcast, industry colleagues and fans reached out to him with messages of support and financial donations.

Artists like Makhadzi, Oskido and Black Coffee offered to help him financially through gigs.

Other musicians are encouraging him to organise shows where they will perform for free to help him raise the money.

The musician’s problems started during the Covid-19 lockdown when he couldn’t work and pay his debts. He ended up owing SARS R2.1 million in unpaid taxes.

On 18 July, the tax man swept his R3.3 million house in Zambezi, Tshwane of movable assets including furniture and music equipment and a bakkie worth R500,000.

“I was stuck with unpaid taxes for Dr Malinga and Linga’s Entertainment and I just couldn’t keep up with the payments,” he said.

The leg-kicking musician told Scrolla.Africa that he can now see the light at the end of his financial woes.

He said though he is grateful for the donations, he would appreciate gigs more so he can make the money to settle his debt.

Malinga said he is proud to be born in South Africa.

“I voiced out my problems because I am not ashamed of what I am going through, I am broke and need help. I thought that no one would come through for me like when I reached out to them earlier in the year.

“I will forever be grateful for every donation I have received. Someone even donated R10 which I appreciate very much,” he added.
