When the skies above the Australian town of Mildura became washed in an amazing, otherworldly pink light, some residents thought they were being visited by aliens.

Others were convinced that the end was nigh.

“I was on the phone to my mum, and my dad was saying the world was ending,” Tammy Szumowski told the Guardian.

The actual reason? A local medicinal cannabis plant.

No, fumes from the plant were not getting the local residents high. The lights which help the cannabis to grow were left on and the blackout blinds were accidentally left open.

The pink light reflected off the cloud and coloured the whole sky bright pink.

“Propagation of cannabis is really interesting and the way they use lights … to increase the growth cycle and speed up the whole process is quite amazing,” Dr Anne Webster, a local resident told the publication.

The facility is run by Cann Group Ltd, the first company in Australia to begin producing medicinal cannabis.
