When community patrol officers stopped a man at a roadblock in Alexandra on Saturday and found R13,300 on him, they thought they were dealing with a serious criminal.

But when they asked him to explain why he had so much money, they were shocked by his answer.

The man told the officers that he was desperate to go and see his girlfriend in the Johannesburg CBD, but didn’t have the money to get to her.

So he decided to “borrow” R100 from his mother.

Then he panicked and realised that his mum would discover the missing money and give him the walloping of his life, so for some reason he decided to take everything – all R13,300.

Happy with his masterful plan, the man set off to see his beloved.

However, his plans were foiled when he was nabbed by the cops.

The police confiscated the money as it is very dangerous to keep such a large sum in their home. But they told the man that they would keep it safe and he should come back on Monday to fetch it.

He said he only wanted to see his girlfriend on a cold Saturday night.

But unfortunately for the chancing lover, Alexandra was a no-go area over the weekend with high police visibility following a spike in serious crime, including killings and armed robberies.

On Sunday Police Minister Bheki Cele hosted a crime imbizo with Gauteng’s provincial police commissioner Lieutenant Colonel Elias Mawela in a bid to clampdown crime in the embattled township. Cele met with residents and listened to their concerns.

Gauteng MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko applauded the patrollers for finding the man.

MEC Mazibuko said if the thugs could know that the man is keeping that amount of money it would put him in danger.

But perhaps he’ll be in even more danger when his mother finds out about his tricks!
