Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin “Iron Duke” Khoza revealed that he was the one handling the late Senzo Meyiwa’s business affairs.
Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain Meyiwa never revealed the identity of his agent but was always grateful to his chairman, whom he referred to as a father.
Khoza is also the chairman of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and vice-president of the South African Football Association (Safa).
Almost eight years after Senzo’s murder, Khoza revealed his secret by saying he was Meyiwa’s agent.
“Senzo was one of the few players in the team that never had an agent. It was the same with Mark Fish and Thamsanqa Gabuza. They never needed to have agents,” said Khoza.
At Pirates, Meyiwa was one of the club’s loyal players despite difficulties he had to endure at the time when he was overlooked by coaches who would prefer Moeneeb Josephs as the number one goalkeeper.
But Meyiwa’s loyalty and hard work paid off in 2012 when he was made the captain of both Pirates and Bafana Bafana.
“When you do good, you make us your ambassadors,” said Khoza.
“I say to players when they are stars people are attracted to them and they will always come to you. But when you are on your way down you must make yourself attractive to people,”
Early this week Khoza also revealed that he still doesn’t have peace following the death of Meyiwa.
“I took him from his home when he was a 13-year-old boy and he became captain of the national team and a national asset,” he said.
“When I took his body to the family I told them ‘I’m happy to bring your son – but not happy to bring him now that he is lifeless’.”
He said he hoped they would find the answers soon.
“And when they find the culprit then I will be at peace. I don’t think the boy deserved that kind of treatment because he was a gentleman,” Khoza said.
