After Nasty C kept her ‘‘Company” on her last single, Johannesburg rapper Indigo Stella has released a killing track titled “Empire (Freestyle)”, on the road to her much anticipated second album Interstella.
Interstella is also the name of the 20-year-old’s independent recording company, from which she has released many classics of her catalogue, including her album Indigo in 2019.
“Company” is one of Indigo Stella’s notable works from 2021, which also include “Pay It Up” featuring one of Mzansi’s hip hop goddesses Nadia Nakia.
But in her latest offering, Indigo reflects for the first time on her career thus far. And fans did not even have to wait for the album to get a taste of it.
Even though remaining independent has been her pride, it has visibly affected her reach, with her biggest song “Company”, getting only over 140,000 views after eight months on YouTube.
“I can’t sign. Man, I owe it to my children. I own my empire, when they ask what my deal is,” she raps.
Indigo, however, would not be the first Mzansi rapper to make it independently. Dee Kaola and Blxckie, who she has previously worked with, are examples.
With the exploitation of artists being rife in the country, we cannot blame them.
“Spend money, make money, do it for a living, I spend so much, but make it back like I print it,” raps the rising star, who feels being independent has not held her back.
Interstella is expected to be released later this year.
