A full year and 17 awards later, one of the best movies to ever come out of South Africa has been added to Showmax’s streaming service.

The movie Fried Barry – which premiered on America’s streaming platform Shudder in August 2020 – will be available on Showmax from Thursday, 19 May.

The movie is directed by award-winning Ryan Kruger and features a heroin junkie named Barry, who only wakes up to take a hit and relive his past moments. But he is forced to live like an alien on planet Earth when he is abducted by real aliens.

Showmax announced this on Tuesday, as its major competitors Netflix released a trailer for the action film Collision, which was shot in Mzansi. This is a few weeks after the US giant premiered another SA movie, Silverton Siege, on Freedom Day.

Fried Barry is the second internationally recognised alien movie made in SA after District 9. Barry has some of Cape Town’s finest actors, including Gary Green, who plays the lead, Barry. The award-winning Nigerian-American actor, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, plays a villain called Kingpin.

MultiChoice’s Showmax recorded 861,000 users in Africa last year, according to Statista’s 2022 report on streaming services in Africa.
