When their bridge was washed away by the recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal, the kids kept missing school. It was too dangerous to cross the UMzinyathi river without it.
Instead of waiting for a municipality to fix the damaged bridge, the UMzinyathi community in iNanda decided to take it upon themselves to fix the mess.
Led by popular gospel singer Babo Ngcobo, about 15 residents, including local business people, got together and came up with a plan to build a new bridge.
It took them over five days to make life better again.
“This bridge was washed away by the heavy floods. It is useful to school kids and the community. When it was washed away some kids couldn’t attend school because it’s dangerous to cross,” said Babo.
He thanked those who chipped in with money to buy material for building.
“I would like to take my hat off to all those who donated money and other materials to make this effort possible. We couldn’t afford to fold our arms while we could do something for ourselves.”
Sibuyile Nhlapho, who attends KwaDabeka High school, praised the efforts of the gospel star and the companies.
“We were stressed when the bridge was washed away. We were forced to take other routes which made us arrive late at school. May God bless them for coming to our rescue.”
The gospel star added that he has been busy donating clothing and food to the needy who are currently housed at Qadi Hall in Inanda.
“These people have nothing since their homes were damaged by the floods. I have managed to source some clothing and food and donated to them. I would like to invite some Good Samaritans to come forward as well.”
