Police uncovered a suspected multi-million-rand drug manufacturing laboratory on a farm in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, on Thursday, 8 October, and arrested five people.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, carried out the operation.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said police discovered quantities of Mandrax and ecstasy tablets at the suspected laboratory.

“Five South African nationals who were found at the premises have been arrested,” she said.

Police said the farm remained an active crime scene. Senior officers were on their way to carry out further assessments, and investigations are continuing. Police are still assessing the scale of the operation and the value of the drugs.

It follows another raid in the area. On Tuesday, 6 October, North West police uncovered a suspected Mandrax-manufacturing facility on a plot in Skeerpoort, near Hartbeespoort Dam. Four people were arrested, and four firearms, including a rifle and three handguns, were seized.

In August, police raided a drug laboratory in Musina, Limpopo, that was used to make crystal meth, known as tik. TimesLive reported that it was valued at more than R600-million.

Police said they remain committed to dismantling organised crime syndicates that make and distribute drugs.
