Netflix, the world’s leading streaming platform, has announced the premiere date for what will become one of the first reality TV shows to feature an A-list celebrity cast all from Africa.
Young, Famous & African is just that. With a cast including vibrant media personality Khanyi Mbau, Naked DJ the party maker, and award-winning female rapper Nadia Nakai, amongst seven other celebrities from the continent.
Even though reality TV has been part of television slots in Africa for decades, it is a new format for Netflix. The new show, which premieres on 18 March, went across borders to bring reality TV fans seven episodes of glitz, fame, and hustle in Africa.
Executive producers of the show, which also features sports presenter Andile Ncube as one of its cast members, said it is unscripted and unapologetically African.
“Young, Famous & African is a depiction of a world that has never been seen before, highlighting authentic stories and unrivalled access to some of the most celebrated personalities,” executive producer Martin Amankwa said.
Media personality Zari the Boss Lady, from Uganda, is also a cast member and is excited about the show.
“The show will give our fans an inside look into our very entertaining, very busy lives,” she said.
Meanwhile, competition between Netflix and Showmax in Mzansi is very tight as they compete for viewership.
The announcement of the new reality show comes after Showmax released the second season of The Wife over the weekend. The show has been dominating the Twitter trends list ever since it premiered on Showmax last year.
