He endured a tough start to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but on Tuesday Chad le Clos showed the world just how good he is by emphatically winning the 200m butterfly semi-final.
The 29-year-old from Durban had qualified for the semi-finals by the skin of his teeth, finishing 16th out of 16 qualifiers in his heat.
Unphased and determined to prove himself, Le Clos grabbed the opportunity and won the semi-final with a time of 1:55.06.
The four-time Olympic medalist is now in the running to win another medal for South Africa.
He qualified third fastest for Wednesday morning’s final at 3.49am.
Le Clos, who is famous for looking at his opponents during the swim for motivation, will have a tough task in beating favourite Kristof Milak of Hungary. Milak qualified in 1:52.22, nearly three seconds faster than the Durbanite.
