- Shoprite stores across the country have dropped prices on basic groceries and home items until Sunday to help poor families.
- Shoppers must use a free savings card to pay less for goods because living costs remain very high right now.
Families are battling to buy food because of the high cost of living. A countrywide sale at Shoprite is helping shoppers stretch their money.
The Rand a Rama sale runs until Sunday, 19 April. It has lower prices on groceries, home items and appliances.
People only get the discounts if they use a free Shoprite Xtra Savings card. Buyers without the card pay full price at the till.
Shoppers save the most money on basic items like maize meal, cooking oil, mayonnaise and chicken portions.
The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group says poor families spend more than half of their food budget on these items.
Nomzi Grootboom, 64, bought groceries at Shoprite in Greenacres Mall in Gqeberha.
“My daughter sends me money on the 15th of every month to top up groceries and this special came at the right time. I saved R400 less than the amount I usually spend every month,” she said.
Another shopper, Cikizwa, bought lunch items.
“I borrowed money from a friend to top up because payday is still far away. I didn’t know there was a special going on and I’ve saved a few more coins to keep me going until month end,” she said.
Deals change depending on the area. People can check local specials on the store’s app, website or WhatsApp.
Shoppers are urged to write a list so they only buy what they need, and to focus on food instead of alcohol deals.
Popular items sell out quickly. People have a better chance of finding stock if they shop during the week.
