- Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi says Kaizer Chiefs scored an offside winning goal in their 1-0 league win.
- Coaches warn referee mistakes cost jobs and money, renewing pressure to introduce video referee technology in the league.
Kaizer Chiefs moved up to third place after a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows, but the result has brought fresh calls for video referees in the Premier Soccer League.
Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi said the winning goal should not have stood.
He said Aiden McCarthy was offside when he scored, and video technology would have corrected the decision.
“The result is tough to take. It’s even worse when you lose to an offside goal,” Mngqithi said.
He said he was not blaming match officials, but pointed to how fast the modern game has become.
Mngqithi said referees cannot see everything during matches. “Even we only see some things after watching video footage,” he said.
He said wrong decisions have serious consequences.
“This is not a game for R200. This is a game for R20-million. Coaches lose jobs. Players get dropped,” he said.
Mngqithi explained that McCarthy was onside when the first ball was played.
He said the problem came when the ball was flicked on by teammate Flávio Silva. Mngqithi said McCarthy was offside during that second phase and scored from it.
Kaizer Chiefs co coach Cedric Kaze agreed with the call for video referees. He said the technology would help officials and improve the league.
Last year, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie travelled to Spain to study how video referees work.
The visit raised hopes that the system would be introduced in the Premier Soccer League.
There has been no update since, and pressure is now growing for action.
