- Ekurhuleni mayor has ordered a full review of all staff promoted by deputy police chief Julius Mkhwanazi, who is currently suspended.
- Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza will speak at a press briefing on Tuesday morning about restoring public trust in the city’s law enforcement.
Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has ordered a deep investigation into every staff promotion that was signed off by suspended deputy police chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
Mkhwanazi is accused of approving questionable promotions within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department while he was in charge.
Now, Mayor Xhakaza wants a team to go over every single case where Mkhwanazi signed off on someone getting a higher post. The aim is to find out if those promotions were fair and legal.
This comes after serious allegations surfaced during the Madlanga Commission, where Mkhwanazi’s actions were brought into question.
The mayor’s office said that this review is part of a much bigger clean-up effort in the city’s law enforcement structures.
Xhakaza is expected to give more details during a media briefing on Tuesday morning, 18 November.
He will speak about the city’s “Renewal Agenda” — a plan to fix what’s broken in the metro’s leadership, especially within the police department.
The briefing will also cover what actions have already been taken after internal findings and testimonies were presented at the Madlanga Commission.
The mayor’s office said it wants to rebuild trust between the public and law enforcement, and ensure the police are professional and fair.
The briefing will take place at the Mayoral Parlour in Germiston at 8:00am.
