Limpopo-born soprano singer Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha won the song prize on Thursday night at the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition in the UK.

She was one of five finalists, impressing the judges with music by Strauss, Schumann and South African composer Le Roux Marais.

The 27 year old Rangwanasha represented Limpopo province singing at national level from 2009 to 2012, and then did a PGDip at the University of Cape Town, and a BTech in Vocal Art at Tshwane University of Technology. She was a young artist with the Cape Town Opera for two years, and has won numerous prizes in South Africa.

After winning the song prize on Thursday, she will be singing in the final on Saturday.
