Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has handed his electronic devices to investigators looking into claims of political interference in police operations.
His spokesperson Sthembiso Mshengu said Mchunu gave the devices voluntarily on Wednesday, 6 November. He said the minister’s actions show “unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law.”
Mshengu added that Mchunu has “nothing to hide” and welcomes any lawful investigation.
Mchunu is on special leave while the probe continues into claims that he and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya interfered in police work.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made the allegations during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating criminal and political interference in the police.
Mkhwanazi told the commission that Mchunu and Sibiya allegedly issued letters to disband a task force, blocked appointments in crime intelligence and moved case dockets into Sibiya’s office.
Mshengu said Mchunu remains confident that a fair process will clear his name and that he is focused on serving South Africans and protecting democratic institutions.
The investigation is ongoing.
