- Tony Yengeni has joined the MK Party and will serve as second deputy president alongside John Hlophe under Jacob Zuma’s leadership.
- Zuma praised Yengeni as a long-time ally, while Yengeni said the MK Party is the only organisation that can “truly liberate” South Africans.
Tony Yengeni has officially left the ANC to join the MK Party – and he’s already landed a top position.
The announcement was made at a media briefing in Durban, where MK Party leader Jacob Zuma introduced Yengeni as the party’s second deputy president.
Zuma said he was “happy” to welcome his long-time ally. “We come from very far with our second president, comrade Yengeni,” Zuma said. “He is trusted and capable of handling any role.”
He added that Yengeni will work closely with him and deputy president John Hlophe to strengthen the party. “Comrade Yengeni has played many roles. The only position he has not assumed is to be the president,” Zuma said.
Yengeni, a former ANC National Executive Committee member, said he was proud to start a new political chapter.
“The MK Party is the only organisation I believe can truly liberate the people of South Africa,” he said.
He said he was excited to work with Zuma again and promised to give his full energy to the party.
