- The ANC Youth League in KZN criticised the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party Labour Desk for removing foreign nationals from their jobs at filling stations and other workplaces.
- The league said South Africans cannot expect jobs they are not qualified for and urged people to stop harassing foreign workers.
The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in KwaZulu-Natal has spoken out against the ongoing campaign to remove foreign nationals from their jobs in South Africa.
The league said it was concerned about the actions of the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party (MKP) Labour Desk, which has been visiting workplaces demanding that companies replace foreign workers with South Africans.
The MKP group has inspected filling stations, restaurants, factories and security companies, claiming these businesses hire “illegal immigrants” for jobs that should be given to locals.
But ANCYL KZN spokesperson Phoyisa Hlongwa said it was wrong to target foreign nationals who are qualified for their jobs.
“Being South African does not automatically qualify you for a job,” Hlongwa said. “If a foreign national is more qualified than a South African for a post, that person has the right to be employed.
“We are concerned about the behaviour of people who attack foreign nationals at their workplaces. We also have many South Africans working in other countries, and they deserve fair treatment too.”
Meanwhile, ANCYL KZN secretary Lulama Mabude said the increase in undocumented immigrants in the province is the fault of Premier Thami Ntuli, who she accused of making the Community Safety and Liaison Department under his office “dysfunctional.”
She said police in KwaZulu-Natal have failed to manage the influx of undocumented foreign nationals because of poor leadership.
