- Advocate Terry Motau quit as evidence leader in the Madlanga Commission after only two weeks because of internal issues and not money problems.
- He was replaced by Advocate Matthew Chaskalson, who previously worked on the Marikana Commission and the State Capture inquiry.
Advocate Terry Motau has walked away from the police corruption inquiry after only two weeks, saying his decision had nothing to do with money.
Motau was the evidence leader at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria but resigned suddenly.
He told 702’s Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa that the job came with a big pay cut, but that was not the reason he left.
“Taking up such a task is an act of service,” he said. “I have no doubt other evidence leaders also took a huge pay cut. But I was conscious of the fact that this is a different task.”
Motau explained that internal problems led him to step aside. He would not go into detail but said his decision was not about personal finances.
He reminded listeners that during the Zondo Commission some people worked for two months without any pay, even as living costs went up.
The Madlanga Commission has now appointed Advocate Matthew Chaskalson to replace him. Chaskalson previously worked on the Marikana Commission and the State Capture inquiry.
