· A disciplinary chair and his bodyguards were ambushed by gunmen at Nyanga taxi rank, leaving two men injured and sparking panic among commuters.
· Police are investigating the motive as taxi violence continues, with 13 people shot last month in battles over routes between rival associations.
Chaos broke out at the Nyanga taxi rank in Cape Town when gunmen opened fire on a disciplinary chair and his bodyguards.
The shooting happened around 18:15 on Thursday while the rank was packed with commuters heading home from work.
Passengers and vendors ran for cover as bullets flew.
One vendor abandoned her stall in panic. “I have never heard so many gunshots in my life. I ran and left my chickens behind. The most important thing was saving my life,” she said.
A passenger said he sprinted to the nearby police station. “It was the only safe place I could think of. We are glad that no one innocent was killed. But it was selfish to do that in such a busy place.”
Two men were injured in the attack and taken to hospital.
Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that Nyanga police registered two cases of attempted murder.
“Two men sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a medical facility for treatment. The motive for the attack forms part of ongoing investigation, the assailants are yet to be arrested,” said Pojie.
Although some passengers said the shooting was linked to taxi violence, police would not confirm this.
Last month, 13 people were shot in four days at taxi ranks across Cape Town. Six were killed and seven wounded in clashes between rival associations Cata and Codeta over the Somerset route.
Cata spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi said the association had no comment at this stage.
Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, a prominent taxi owner was gunned down in Msinga’s Pomeroy area.
Sanele Zondo, who was well known for his community service, was ambushed by three men while sitting in his vehicle. He and two others were killed.
No arrests have been made and police are still investigating.
