Bonolo Moahludi is only 11 years old but if it wasn’t for her, many more of Alex’s children would go hungry.
She spends what little money her mother can afford to give her to cook soup and feed the vulnerable children in her community in Alexandra, Johannesburg.
Whenever she went to school carrying her lunchbox, her heart sank to see other children arriving at class without food. Some even failed to get to school because they did not have anything to eat the entire day.
Bonolo, a grade six learner at Dr Knak Primary School, said that as winter set in she couldn’t take it anymore. So she told her mother Tebogo Moahludi that she wanted to use her monthly lunch money to buy soup ingredients to feed the most vulnerable children in her neighbourhood.
She said with the current Covid-19 regulations, which prevent learners from going to school every day, things in her kasi have been hard for most children. “You can see from their faces that they are hungry.
“It doesn’t matter what time of the day, some children that I know always look hungry, and when I ask them, they tell me heartbreaking stories that they haven’t eaten anything.”
She said that she is motivated by these children and she has vowed to cook for them for the entire winter season.
Bonolo’s mother, Teboho Moahludi, said she was taken aback when her daughter told her what she was planning.
“But then I saw that she was serious and she didn’t want to move away from me without getting a yes answer.
“So I agreed to give her a monthly R300 where she gladly went to buy all she needed for her project,” said Teboho.
The 54-year-old mother said her last born daughter has always been passionate about sharing. She would never eat without making sure everyone else had eaten first.
“Every child has the right to good food and education. And Bonolo is helping them to achieve that,” the mother of three said.
But now they need the help of the public
Teboho said that when the resources are finished she won’t be able to fund another batch of soup.
So she is asking for donations from the public to help fulfill her daughter’s wish to see every child in Alex recieve hot meals this winter.
