Twelve learners died and seven others were seriously injured when the private scholar transport they were travelling in was involved in a horrific accident on Wednesday morning.

The minibus driver also died in the accident.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, confirmed the minibus was involved in an accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong.

“The department is deeply saddened to confirm that 11 learners from Rocklands Primary School and one learner from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville, along with their driver, lost their lives in a devastating accident,” he said.

Chiloane said he was told that a bakkie hit the learners’ minibus from behind, causing it to overturn and catch fire. The accident occurred shortly before 7am. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this horrific incident.

He said the department had dispatched its psychosocial support team to the schools to provide immediate support and to work closely with the schools and affected families.

Counselling services will be available to all learners and staff members to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of the tragedy.

“I am profoundly saddened by this tragic event,” Chiloane said. “The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners.

“We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and entire community of both schools during this incredibly difficult time. We also wish all injured learners a speedy recovery.”

Chiloane will visit the scene of the accident and both schools on Wednesday.
