107-year-old Gogo finally gets chance to vote

Paulina Mahlangu, who is 107 years old and must be one of the oldest voters in the country, finally got the chance to vote after missing an earlier opportunity during the casting of special votes on Monday and Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the pensioner was collected by volunteers and taken to the voting station at the Kristo Inkosi Catholic Church in Kwa-Thema, Ekurhuleni.

Mahlangu is one of the thousands of special voters whose names didn’t appear on the home visit list and whom the IEC could not transport to voting stations on Tuesday.

As volunteers wheeled Mahlangu into the voting station, she told the voting desk coordinator that she wanted to vote for “Maphosa [Ramaphosa] and [Nelson] Mandela”.

Mahlangu told Scrolla.Africa she was relieved at being able to finally cast her vote.

“I will sleep peacefully knowing that I voted. I am encouraging young people to vote and not to give up even if the queues are long,” she said.
