  • Jacob Zuma told men in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, that alcohol abuse is holding back progress in South Africa and must stop immediately.
  • Zuma danced and jumped on stage to show his fitness, urging men to live healthy lives and stay sober to help the country.

Former president and uMkhonto weSizwe Party leader Jacob Zuma had strong words for men who spend their time drinking instead of helping rebuild South Africa.

Speaking to supporters in Richmond outside Pietermaritzburg, Zuma said that men who are always drunk are dragging down the country’s progress.

‘We have a problem of men who are always drunk. How are we going to solve the problems of this country if we are always drunk? This alcoholic habit must come to an end,’ he said.

Zuma even mimicked the way drunk men talk and behave, drawing laughter from the crowd. But his message was serious – he said the country can’t move forward if men don’t take responsibility for their actions.

He told the crowd that being sober and healthy is key to tackling South Africa’s problems.

‘You need to be sober to fight the problems of this country. How will you fight if you’re always drunk? Wake up and stop alcohol,’ he said.

The 83-year-old politician also showed his supporters that he’s still physically strong. He danced, jumped and performed gymnastic moves on stage to loud cheers.

Recent studies show that South Africa ranks among the highest in the world for alcohol use per drinker. About 31% of people over 15 drink alcohol.
