·  The Democratic Alliance’s federal leader John Steenhuisen announced Zille as the party’s mayoral candidate at a rally in Soweto.

·  Zille will go head-to-head with African National Congress mayor Dada Morero in the next elections, set for late 2026 or early 2027.

Helen Zille wants to end her long political career where it began — in Johannesburg.

The former Cape Town mayor and current chairperson of the Democratic Alliance’s federal council has confirmed she is standing as the party’s candidate for mayor of Johannesburg.

Zille had been hinting for weeks that she was ready to take the plunge. On Saturday, Democratic Alliance federal leader John Steenhuisen made it official during a party rally in Soweto.

Zille will face off against current mayor Dada Morero of the African National Congress in the next local government elections, expected between 2 November 2026 and the end of January 2027.

Steenhuisen told the crowd: “It is only when Johannesburg works that South Africa works.” He said the Democratic Alliance could no longer sit back and watch the corruption, collapse and mismanagement of the city.

Zille said Johannesburg had become “the most devastating example of what bad government can do to great people”.

She reminded supporters that she was born and raised in Johannesburg and had lived her entire early life in the city.

“Standing as a daughter of Johannesburg, the city where I was born and raised. It is the place where I took my first breath, my first steps and spoke my first words. It is where I went to school, attended university, rented my first flat and started my first job,” she said.

She promised to harness the energy and ambition of ordinary residents.

“All they need is a mayor and municipal government to get behind them,” she said. “To be the catalyst for change and spend the multi-billion-rand city budget in the right way that best contributes to the city’s resurrection.”

Zille also echoed recent comments by President Cyril Ramaphosa, saying Democratic Alliance-led municipalities had outperformed those run by the African National Congress.
