- One zama zama was killed and another wounded in an early morning shootout with police in Germiston.
- Four suspects were arrested while another escaped after the gang opened fire on police during an operation.
A zama zama died in a gun battle with police in the Marathon Informal Settlement near Primrose, Germiston, on Tuesday morning.
Members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) were carrying out an operation against illegal mining at 4:30 am when they came face to face with armed men.
The area is known for illegal mining, where zama zamas work in old mine shafts. Their work has caused roads, factories, and parts of the settlement to sink.
EMPD spokesperson Ann Makgato said the men, who were carrying rifles, 9mm guns, and revolvers, started shooting at the police.

“Officers tactically responded, and a shootout ensued, which led to one suspect being fatally wounded. He was declared dead at the scene, while another suspect, who was wounded during the shootout, was rushed to OR Tambo Memorial Hospital by the Gauteng Emergency Services.
“Another suspect, who was in possession of a rifle, fled the scene, while four others were arrested and detained at Primrose Police Station,” she said.
Makgato said the suspects will appear in court soon.
Acting EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi said he would not allow what happened in Stilfontein to happen in Ekurhuleni.
“Minimum force will be used to tackle criminal syndicates as they are armed and dangerous,” he said.
