The fiancé of the late Zahara, Mpho Xaba, said he is still paying off her R820,000 hospital bill, despite being ignored by her family.
Zahara passed away at the age of 36 on 11 December 2023 after nearly three weeks in a private hospital in Johannesburg suffering from liver complications. She was buried in the Eastern Cape on 23 December.
Zahara, whose real name was Bulelwa Mkutukana, was a multi-platinum, award-winning singer/songwriter and self-taught guitarist who released five albums and won dozens of local and international awards.
Xaba said that he and his family were completely sidelined from funeral arrangements and were not consulted regarding the late singer’s legacy.
He only attended Zahara’s public farewell ceremony at the ICC in East London and does not know where his former fiancé is buried.
Xaba said that Zahara’s family accused him of trying to claim her properties, which he denied, saying that he has his own properties and even helped prevent Zahara’s house from being auctioned, Fakaza reported.
Earlier this year, Zahara’s family tried to organise a fundraiser to buy back her home but failed to get a venue before cancelling the event.
