‘You will never go hungry while I’m alive,’ says Babes

Despite her infamous public spats with Zamanguni Gumede, Babes Wodumo has given her mother-in-law a dignified funeral.

Zamanguni and Babes were always at each other’s throats when Zamanguni’s son, Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo, was still married to Babes.

Babes Wodumo, real name Bongekile Simelane, shocked people at the funeral in KwaMashu on Saturday when she said she paid the funeral expenses to show she cared for her mother-in-law.

She said she was not saying this to show off.

“You know we had our differences but later we reconciled and I apologised for my action,” she said.

“I assure the Maphumulos that they will never go hungry while I’m still alive. My door in my Westville house will always be open to you.”

Zamanguni, who fell ill and suffered a stroke days after burying Mampintsha last month, was laid to rest at Redhill Cemetery in Durban.

Her daughter, Pinky Gumede, thanked the singer for her kindness in forking out her money to give their mother a dignified funeral.

Musicians including DJ Sox, Mondli Ngcobo and Idols runner up Nozipho Khumalo braved the scorching heat and came out to pay their last respects.
