You better not run: Africa’s fastest man joins Kenyan police force

By Dylan Bettencourt

Getting away has been made more difficult for criminals in Kenya after Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, graduated as a police constable.

Over 2,800 constables graduated on Tuesday from the National Police College in Nairobi, at a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto.

But one graduate stood out above the rest. Omanyala, who is often at the head of the pack, led the line of new recruits.

The recruits finished the basic police training course including courses on human rights, community policing, public order management, skills at arms and countering violent extremism, according to the National Police Service.

Omanyala will without a doubt use his incredible speed to keep the streets of Kenya as safe as possible.

Criminals looking to commit a crime while Omanyala is on duty will have to ensure they have a fast car to escape the scene – and even then the 27-year-old might catch up.

Omanyala set the African record in the 100m sprint last September, crossing the line in 9.77 seconds.

A few months before, in June 2022, he became the second Kenyan to become the African champion in the 100m.
