“Worst Christmas of my life” says mother of kidnapped baby

Asanda Yeko could not enjoy the festive season not knowing whether her five-month-old baby boy is still alive.

Baby Ivakele Yeko was kidnapped at the beginning of December after his nanny left him with an unknown woman to go and buy food. He remains missing.

The nanny had gone to a shop in Somerset West, Cape Town when a stranger allegedly offered to look after the baby and the nanny’s six-year-old daughter while the nanny went into a shop.

When the nanny came out of the shop, neither the baby nor her daughter were anywhere to be found.

The nanny, who no longer works for the mother, explained that the stranger offered to look after the children while she shopped, an offer she accepted.

The nanny’s daughter was dropped off at her home, according to Yeko.

But the baby is still missing. “I had the worst Christmas of my life, not knowing if my son was still alive. Wondering if he was being fed keeps me awake. I don’t know how my life can go forward until I find my son,” she told Scrolla.Africa.

The distraught mother is pleading with the kidnapper to bring her child back.

“I want my baby back. Whenever I hear a baby’s cry I run outside, hoping it is my son. I don’t know what to do to ease the terrible pain I’m feeling now. I’m pleading with the person who has my son to bring him back,” she said.

“The stress I’m living with will kill me. I’m also afraid that by the time they bring him back I will be long gone because of stress.”

SAPS gave Scrolla.Africa permission to publish Ivakele’s photo to assist with their investigation.
